Your research is funded by a funder who is not a member of cOAlition S. Check your contract to see whether your funder sets requirements for open access publishing and if you can use your research budget for this purpose.

Depending on your funder’s open access requirements, the following routes may be suitable:

  • Diamond open access
  • Gold open access
  • Hybrid open access
  • Green open access, via the Taverne scheme

We recommend you share your article first as a preprint on a preprint server. As a result, your research results are immediately available. It could lead to extra feedback from your peers or your community and contribute to your visibility.

Diamond open access

What is Diamond open access?

  • Publication in a full open access journal.
  • Publication is immediately open access.
  • Free of charge for authors.
  • Publication has an open license (preferably CC BY).

With diamond open access, you will almost certainly meet your funder’s open access requirements.

How does the funding work?

In Diamond open access the author does not have to pay publication costs. The publishers are funded by the academic community.

Where do I find the journals?

Gold Open Access

What is Gold open access?

  • Publication in a full open access journal.
  • Publication is immediately open access.
  • Involves publication costs (APCs).
  • Publication has an open license, preferably CC BY. Check whether your funder mandates a specific licence.

How does the funding work?

If your funder mandates open access, you are likely allowed to pay any associated publication costs from your research budget. Alternatively, you may be able to make use of an open access deal. This will result in up to a 100% discount on the APCs.

Some journals provide APC waivers or discounts in exchange for peer review work.

Where do I find the journals?

Please note: a deal between the UU and a particular publisher does not necessarily guarantee the scientific quality of all included journals. Always keep a critical eye. Read more about reliable publishers and predatory publishers.

Hybrid open access

What is hybrid open access?

  • Publication in a subscription journal that makes individual articles open access on request.
  • Publication is immediately open access.
  • Involves publication costs (APCs).
  • Publication has an open licence, preferably CC BY. Check whether your funder mandates a specific licence.

How does the funding work?

You may be able to make use of an open access deal. This will result in up to a 100% discount on the APCs. If a particular journal is not part of a deal, be sure to check your funder’s open access policy. Some funders will not allow you to pay an APC for a hybrid publication from your research budget.

Where do I find the journals?

  • In the UU Journal Browser, hybrid journals are indicated as ‘open request journals’. Here you can also check if the journals are part of a deal.

Green open access via Taverne or Rights Retention

What is green open access, via the Taverne scheme?

  • You publish closed access with the publisher, but open access via the UU Repository.
  • The article will become open access six months after publication.
  • Free of charge for authors.
  • The open access version gets the same licence as the closed version.

Please read your funder’s open access policies carefully. You will not be able to use the Taverne route if your funder mandates publication under an open licence, and/or requires output to be immediately open access.

How does the funding work?

This route of open access publishing is free of charge.

How do I follow this route?

Check whether your article is in Pure. If not, add it yourself. After six months, the library automatically makes closed-access publications open access.

What is green open access, via the Rights Retention Strategy?

  • You publish closed access at the publisher, but the author’s version (AAM) becomes open access through the UU Repository.
  • The AAM is immediately open access.
  • Free of charge for authors.
  • The publication gets a CC BY licence in the UU Repository.

How does the funding work?

This route of open access publishing is free of charge. First, you publish closed access at the publisher, this may involve costs.

How do I follow this route?

Please include a Rights Retention Statement in your article when you submit it to the journal. You can find the statement in the step-by-step guides for UU and UMC Utrecht authors. Upload the author’s version (AAM) of your article to Pure and tick the ‘Rights Retention Statement’ box. The author’s version will th
