Book chapters

NWO requires that book chapters be made available via a repository at most twelve months after publication. An open licence is not required. 

If the editor of the edited volume to which you are contributing opts for diamond or gold open access, your chapter will immediately be made open access.   

If the editor chooses to publish behind a paywall, we recommend that you use green open access via the Taverne scheme. If you personally prefer to publish your work without an embargo and under an open licence, then hybrid open access may be an option. 

Green open access  

What is Green open access via the Taverne scheme? 

  • The book to which you are contributing is published closed access by the publisher.
  • Your chapter will be made available in the UU Repository six months after the book’s publication. 
  • This route is free of charge for authors. 
  • The open access version will be subject to the same licence as the closed version. 

How do I follow this route? 

Upload the chapter to Pure if it isn’t already there. The university library will take care of the rest. 

Hybrid open access 

What is hybrid open access for book chapters? 

  • The book or edited volume to which you contribute will be published closed access. 
  • Your individual chapter is immediately made open access.
  • This route involves publication costs (CPCs).
  • Your chapter is published under an open licence, preferably CC BY. 

Hybrid open access can be a good solution if you want to publish your work without an embargo and under an open licence. However, we do not recommend this option in most cases, as there is a risk of ‘double dipping’. 

How does the funding work? 

You may cover the costs of making your chapter open access from your NWO research budget. 

How do I follow this route?

Check whether the publisher offers this route. Many traditional publishers that offer gold open access will also offer hybrid options. Make sure that the contract with the publisher stipulates that your chapter will be made available as open access.
