Book chapters

ERC (Horizon Europe) requires that all research output from its funded projects be published immediately as open access. This also applies to book chapters. If the editor of the edited volume to which you are contributing opts for diamond or gold open access, your chapter will immediately be made open access. Please note: any publication costs for book chapters can only be paid from your research budget if the entire book is open access. 

If the editor chooses closed publication, you can still meet ERC’s requirements through the green open access Rights Retention Strategy.    

Green open access 

What is green open access via the Rights Retention Strategy? 

• The volume you’re contributing to is published closed access by the publisher. 
• The author’s version (AAM) of your chapter is made immediately available via the UU Repository. 
• This route is free of charge for authors. 
• The publication gets a CC BY licence in the UU Repository. 

ERC requires immediate open access publication of book chapters, so Taverne is not an option. The Rights Retention Strategy is possible, but not yet a very established route for book chapters, so the risk of pushback from the editor and/or publisher is real. That is why you should consult as soon as possible with the editor of the book.  

How do I follow this route? 

Please include a Rights Retention Statement in your chapter when you submit it to the editor. You can find the statement in the step-by-step guides for UU and UMC Utrecht authors. Upload the author’s version (AAM) of your chapter to Pure and tick the ‘Rights Retention Statement’ box.
