Trade books

Trade books or popular science books don’t need to be published open access. These books are commonly published by regular, non-academic publishers. This allows you to make your work accessible to a broad, non-academic audience, both in terms of content and cost. This is in line with Utrecht University’s Open Science policy, even though these publishers do not usually offer open access options.

Do you still want to publish open access? In the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) you will find academic and non-academic publishers with experience in open access publishing. Keep in mind that the availability of a print edition will greatly enhance the visibility of your book, as this will enable its distribution through bookshops and public libraries. Not all open access publishers offer this option, although some do.

Please note that the UU does not provide funding to cover the costs of open access publishing for trade books.
